Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation

AMSC Student Council

The ASC is a non-profit educational organization with the following goals and purposes:

  • to plan and facilitate meetings for the students of the Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation (AMSC) Program at the University of Maryland;
  • to promote peer mentoring; social interaction, group study and skill development amongst AMSC Students;
  • to voice student concerns to the AMSC Graduate Committee;
  • to voice concerns of the AMSC Graduate Committtee and AMSC Director to the AMSC students;
  • to represent the AMSC students in the Graduate Student Government (GSG).

News

September 10, 2007: P. Aaron Lott (SC) and Spotlight organizer Jane Long (MATH) presented a proposal for a poster session to be added to the spotlight competition to Department Chair Professor James Yorke. The poster session will be held during the Graduation Conference each year. The Department agreed to fund poster printing. We will continue to look for funding for the prize money. September 7, 2007: The ASC Graduation conference subcommitte committee members Mike O'Hara, Scott Olsson and P. Aaron Lott met with the Spotlight committee members Scott Olsson and Jane Long and Juliana Belding to discuss funding fo this year's Spotlight competition and Graduation Conference. The conversation included having a poster session at the Graduation conference that would be a part of the spotlight competition.

June 7, 2007: The 2007-2008 ASC committee has migrated the AMSC student council wiki information to a new MATH wiki. For details visit the new wiki.

September 11, 2006: The 2006-2007 ASC committee has started a new AMSC student seminar. For details visit the seminar website.

September 1, 2005: The 2005-2006 ASC committee election has been finished and five new members are elected. See the "Membership" section below to see who are serving this year!

April 22, 2005: The proposal for "Spotlight on Graduate Writing" met with overwhelming approval at the April 19, 2005 AMSC Graduate Committee Meeting. More information about the writing competition, slated to start next year, will be sent to students and faculty before the end of the Spring semester.

April 19, 2005: Aaron Lott (SC) and Chris Danforth (SC) presented their proposal for a "Spotlight on Graduate Writing" at the April 19, 2005 ASC meeting. The proposal will presented to the AMSC Graduate Committee at the April 22, 2005 meeting. The proposal can be viewed here.

Nov 10, 2004:   The Amended ASC Constitution was unanimously approved (14-0) by the AMSC student body on November 9, 2004. Links to the current constitution can be found below in the Constitution section on this page. Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote.

Nov 02, 2004:   An amended ASC Constitution was approved by the ASC on October 28, 2004. You can view the proposed updates in html or pdf format. The changes reflect the inclusion of the position of ASC Treasurer, a position required for gaining GSG recognition as a student group. This recognition will allow the ASC to request funds from the GSG for AMSC-related events. Ratification ballots will be sent to students on November 2, 2004, and the voting will conclude by November 9, 2004. Make sure to vote!
