AMSC Student Council
Meeting Agenda
April 19, 2005
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
MTH 2400
- Call to Order
11:04 pm
- Approvals
- Minutes (October 28, 2004)
Approved, no changes
- Agenda (April 19, 2005)
Approved, with changes: Suzanne proposes to talk about the conference (added to the section of "Old Business")
- Welcome - Danny
- Meeting/Committee Reports
- AMSC Graduate Committee Report
- February 25, 2005 Meeting - Danny
- The Dissertation prospectus requirement is not clear.
- Discussion about petitioning for Graduate Committee about
making exceptions to preliminary requirements. The procedure is
not documented or at least not very acceptable. We need to let
students in need of this be aware of procedures encourage
students to file petition.
- ASC can host an annual student-run meeting talking about
issues regarding policies and procedures and/or timing for
completion of program requirements. Such a meeting should be
strategically placed to help students the most; suggestions
include beginning of year, beginning of Spring semester, and
just before the end of Spring Semester. ASC should discuss
benefits of each of these times.
- GSG Report
- Funding Opportunities - Chris
Chris talked about
the procedure to apply for funding from GSG. The procedure is
available online and is very routine. Chris opened a checking
account for the ASC at Chevy Chase Bank. The ASC also received
funding for the SC Student Seminar ($100 received, $250
requested). The ASC website should include links to GSG forms and
an archive of the funding requests made to the GSG (and other
sources) to help future ASC members. Chris and Bing will
coordinate this.
- Old Business
- ASC is now a GSG-registered student group - Danny
This has to be renewed each year by the incoming ASC President.
- ASC Graduation Conference
- Suzanne mentioned the poor attendance of the Spotlight on
Graduate Research talks.
- Suzanne proposed to combine Spotlight on Graduate Research,
Spotlight on Graduate Writing, and talks by graduating students
into a single 1-2 day conference with higher profile, better
attendance than any alone could expect.
- Danny noted that people are graduating throughout the
year. Maybe the name should be "ASC Student Recognition
Conference", or something that is more general.
- Changes in Qualifying Exam Procedures
- Computer Science - Suzanne
We need to bring people's
(including AMSC Director, AMSC Faculty and AMSC students)
attention to the changes in the AM program, especially those
influenced and/or cause by changes in requirements of qualifying
requirements of the AMSC participating departments. These changes
should be documented well on the AMSC web site as soon as they are
accepted by the AMSC Graduate Committee.
- Tracking procedures in other departments - Danny
- Policies/procedures for qualifying requirements for each of
the AMSC participating departments should be revisiting. A plan,
including responsible members and a reasonable time line, should
be drafted by the AMSC Graduate Committee. At the very least, a
list of the participating departments that differentiates those
requiring exams versus those requiring completion of courses
should be created.
- AMSC policies/requirements need to be updated.
- SC credit requirement for 600+ level courses is higher than
for AM. Dr. Levermore has verbally acknowledge that this is not
the case (the SC electives do not have to be 600+ level), but
nothing has been put in writing.
- Publishing AMSC policies and procedures - Danny
- Who's in charge is this?
Find someone to keep a
close eye on this. Should this be a student or a faculty member?
- SC preliminary requirements
- Doctoral prospectus procedure/timing
- Grad school listing of SC - still includes laptop
distribution
- New Business
- 2005-2006 ASC Elections
For continuity, it would be best if
some of the current members would stay. To make this official, the
ASC Constitution would have to be amended.
- AMSC Graduate Committee Requests
- April 22, 2005 Meeting - Danny
- Spotlight on Graduate Writing - Chris
- Breaking up your dissertation content into multiple
sections during their early years in AMSC may be good for
one's career.
- It would be in addition to the Spotlight on Graduate
Research competition.
- Benefits: the paper submitted could turn into a journal
article, dissertation prospectus, scholarly paper for MA/MS
without thesis, dissertation chapter, etc.
- Should this be geared toward general audience or
specialists? If the former, how will it help students on their
way to a Ph.D.? If the latter, how will papers in different
areas be judged in the competition?
-
- The judging criteria should be clear and lend to judging
papers from a wide variety of content. The prizes should be
awarded based solely on those published criteria.
- Member Business
Chris, Bing, and Suzanne are all willing to serve on the 2005-2006
ASC.
- Adjournment
Thanks from Danny for everyone's time, effort and dedication to the
ASC. 12:20 pm.
