AMSC NEWS http://www.amsc.umd.edu/news.html AMSC Program NEWS en-us Physics/Numerical Modeler at Metron http://www.amsc.umd.edu/documents/metron.html My company is currently looking for someone with a graduate degree in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or closely related field that has experience in numerical modeling and simulation and has a strong computer background (C, C++, or Java). Ive attached the job description. I would appreciate you passing this on if you know anyone in the market or soon to be. Our technical staff has 32 Ph.D.s, 7 masters, and 9 bachelors. We are involved in, among other things, 1) Extending mathematics for detection theory on random graphs, patterns, and sparse categorical data. 2) Physical modeling including acoustic, electro-optic, and RF 3) Data fusion for detection and tracking 4) Command and control modeling and simulations for mine warfare, small boat swarm, anti-terrorism and force protection, etc. The work at Metron is challenging and the people are very helpful and engaging. If interested please contact Chris Husband Congratulations to the AMSC Class of 2007 http://www.amsc.umd.edu/documents/2007_grads/Congratulations%20AMSC%20Class%20of%202007.html Graduate Research Opportunity in Computatational Molecular Dynamics http://amsc.umd.edu/documents/research_md_mc.html I am looking for a student in Applied Math who would be interested in working on Atomistic Simulation methods, primarily involving Molecular Dynamics/Monte Carlo hybrid methods. The goal is to understand the dynamics of Aerosol nanoparticles. The application area are two fold, and the student can pick which application area he/she would like to focus on. One is aerosols relevant to the atmosphere and global climate change. The other application is nanoparticles employed in nanomedicine. I would be happy to meet with students who might be interested, to give more details and arrange for them to meet with my grad students and post-doc working on analogous problems. Our group has a dedicated 98 CPU cluster purchased last year so computational resources are plentiful, and students will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the Computational Sciences group at NIST. Abstract Deadline March 16, 2007 http://www.gsg.umd.edu/GRID/ GRID 2007 is a one-day inter-disciplinary and inter-program symposium consisting of both poster and oral presentations. All UMCP graduate students are eligible to showcase their research project. Due to space and time constraints, only primary original research will be eligible to showcase. This excludes proposal presentations where the presentation consists of proposed research to be completed in the future. A poster presentation will consist of a 36 x 48 (maximum) poster with a 5-7 minute synopsis given by the author. A 2-minute question and answer period will follow. Posters are a standard form of presentation in the Physical, Life and Social Sciences, as well as technology and mathematics. There is no option of a power point presentation. An oral presentation will consist of a 10 minute recitation and a 2 minute question and answer period. Recitation of a written manuscript is a standard form of presentation in the Arts and Humanities. A recitation of a written manuscript is not a power point presentation. Students must be present during their scheduled presentation time to be eligible for awards. Posters will be on display for the entire day in the Colony Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union. Oral presentations will be held in the Margaret Brent Room (A and B) and the Benjamin Banneker Room (A and B) 2007 Graduation Conference Abstract Submission Deadline March 9 http://www.math.umd.edu/research/spotlight/conference The Graduation Conference celebrates the research efforts of graduating members (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.) from the MATH, STAT, and AMSC programs in the form of a one-day conference. The event provides an arena for graduating students to present an invited 20 minute talk. Panel discussions and workshops from previous graduates and professionals will supplement the research talks. Typically, graduate students pursue internships after completing a year of class work. The pursuit of such opportunities is expected to broaden the base of expertise for this new discipline in the Greater Philadelphia region. Georgia Institute of Technology Postdoc position in Applied Dynamical Systems http://www.amsc.umd.edu/news/gatech_postdoc.html The Department of Mathematics of the Georgia Institute of Technology has a three-year postdoctoral position available, beginning August 2007, in the field of Applied Dynamical Systems. Special consideration will be given to applicants with some experience in mathematical ecology, mathematical modeling of infectious diseases, and/or dynamical systems on networks. This position will include teaching one course per semester. Georgia Tech's Mathematics department, with its Center for Dynamical Systems and Nonlinear Studies, along with a new Program in Applied and Biological Contemporary Mathematics, offers a rich and stimulating research environment for young researchers. Georgia Tech's Biology department has strong research groups in Ecology and Bioinformatics, and is quickly becoming a major player in Integrative Biological Systems. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control is located just several miles from the Georgia Tech campus. The postdoc will interact with researchers from across all of campus and the Atlanta area. Applicants should send application materials to APPDYNPOSTDOC@math.gatech.edu. Please send a curriculum vita, a two- page research summary, and arrange for four letters of reference to be sent as soon as possible. All applications must be submitted electronically. Full consideration will be given to those applications received by February 1, 2007; however, all applications will be given consideration until the available position is filled. The Georgia Institute of Technology is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Veterans, minorities, women, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. UWT Tenure Track Position http://www.washington.edu/admin/eoo/ads/2006/aa1439.html Math position open at UW Tacoma in the Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences program (which houses science & math) -- we're looking for someone who can work with folks from different academic units on campus (e.g., business, urban studies, arts & sciences, computer science, etc.) to help develop a math curriculum for the entire campus. Good teaching is expected, as is a strong interest in research (esp. applied, interdisciplinary, working with faculty & students across the curriculum). There's only one other math faculty member on campus right now, so this will be a cool "ground-floor" opportunity for the right person - pls. pass the announcement on to anyone you think might be interested/good for the job!
