Funding

Students in AMSC find funding from many resources. Applicants in the AMSC program are strongly encouraged to apply for Graduate fellowships from agencies such as NSF, DOE and NASA. Through various affiliations AMSC students often find funding through Teaching Assisantships, Research Grants or Fellowships.

Students seeking funding should mark on their application that they are seeking funding.

Outside Funding Opportunities

Many Graduate Fellowships have deadlines early in the fall semester one year prior to receiving the award. These fellowships are competitive, applicants should prepare for the application process as early as possible. Students are often requested to find a scientific advisor as part of the application. Students may want to search our list of AMSC faculty by program and begin correspondence with faculty. A list of several graduate and postdoctoral fellowships listed online at science.gov.

The National Science Foundation offers several Graduate Fellowship Programs. Visit their website at www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_list.jsp?org=DGE for details.

The National Physical Science Foundation offers Graduate Fellowships in the Physical Sciences. Visit their website at www.npsc.org for details.

The Department of Energy offers a Computational Science Graduate Fellowship. Visit their website at www.krellinst.org/csgf for details.

NASA has a Graduate Student Research Program. Visit their website at http://fellowships.hq.nasa.gov/gsrp/nav/ for details.

The Department of Homeland Security offers Graduate Fellowships and Scholarships. Visit their website at www.orau.gov/dhsed for details.

NASA Graduate Student Fellowships

Since 2002 ESSIC has offered a graduate student recruitment and fellowship program sponsored by the Earth-Sun Exploration Division at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Each year, GSFC funds an assistantship in Computational Earth Science within the University of Maryland Center for Scientific Computation and Mathematical Modeling (CSCAMM). Typically students work on computational projects involving Atmospheric and Oceanic Modelling. After the first year, the student's assistantship cost is split 50-50 between the University Major Professor and a GSFC scientist serving as thesis co-advisor. The graduate student is expected to work on problems of relevance to NASA/GSFC and do a portion of the thesis research at Goddard.
